Laura, a beloved mother, grandmother, and friend, known as "Nanny" to friends and family alike, died following a massive stroke on Wednesday, September 10th, 2003, one day prior to her 91st birthday, in Colorado Springs, Colorado.

She was born the daughter of Anna Lou Griffith and Thomas Mason Davis, her husband, Rufus Arch Beard, and her brother, Benjamin Angus Davis, predeceased her. She is survived by her children, Charles Thomas Beard and wife, Carol Ann Beard; Peggy Sue Beard Menchaca and husband, Elias Menchaca, Jr.; and Mary Lou Beard Sion and husband, John N. Sion. In addition, 16 grandchildren, 28 great-grandchildren, and 1 great great grandchild survive her. She is also survived by 8 nieces and nephews, as well as best friend and special sister-in-law, Alice S. Davis.

Nanny attended San Gabriel schools until her high school years when she and her brother moved to San Angelo, Texas. She graduated from San Angelo High School in 1930. She married Arch Beard in 1934 and they had three children. During World War II, she cared for her home and children alone while her husband served in the U.S. Navy Seabees in Okinawa. She had no form of transportation other than her young son's red wagon, which she used to carry groceries from the store to her home. In 1953, the family moved to a farm near West, Texas, and in 1975, she moved to Houston, where she resided until her death. Nanny was a fervent Fightin' Texas Aggie fan, and her husband was in the Class of '35. Other family Aggies included son, Tom Beard, Class of '56; son-in-law, Buzz Sion, Class of '60; granddaughter, Suzanne Sion, Class of '91; granddaughter, Cara Sion Winborn, Class of '92; and cousin, Gary Andrews, Class of '60. Nanny will be remembered as a woman of extraordinary insight and common sense who graced family and friends alike with her wonderful culinary talents, to say nothing of her hilarious witticisms and "right on" advice. All who knew her will miss her, and she will be remembered always with a fond smile.

Serving as pallbearers will be her grandsons, Tommy Beard, Mike Beard, Steve Beard, Robb Beard, Mike Malone, Mike Menchaca, David Menchaca, Jay Menchaca, and great-grandson, Chris Beard. Honorary Pallbearers will be the multitude of friends and family who knew and loved Nanny.
