U.S. Senator. During World War I, he served as a First Lieutenant in the United States Marines, (1917-19) and was wounded several times in combat. After the war, he graduated from the law department of Northwestern University in 1926, was admitted to the bar and commenced to practice law in Chicago, Illinois. He was an instructor of law at Northwestern University, (1926-27) and assistant Illinois State’s Attorney, (1926-32). In 1940, he was elected as a Republican to the United States Senate to fill the vacancy caused by the death of James Hamilton Lewis, serving until 1949. An unsuccessful candidate for reelection, he resumed the practice of law until his death of a heart attack at age 59.
