Olympic Games Gold Medalist Athlete. Born in Gainesville, Texas, he was a champion sprinter and was the first one called "The Fastest Man Alive". At the 1920 Olympic Summer Games in Antwerp, Belgium, he won the Gold Medal in the 100 Meter Dash, the Gold Medal in the 4x100 relay and a Silver Medal in the 200 Meter dash. He set the World's record in the 100 Meter and 200 Meter dash in 1921 and at the 1924 Olympic Summer Games in Paris, France he won the Gold Medal in the 200 Meter dash. He served in the US Marine Corps in both World Wars. He was lieutenant of field artillery and served in World War I. Then when World War II broke out, he re-activated and was made a Captain in the Pacific Theater. He was killed in a plane crash on Salisbury Sound, Sitka Borough, Alaska, along with Maj Gen William P. Upshur, Chief of the Marines in the Pacific, and 4 other service men.
