SKETCH OF LIFEOF THE OLIVER GARD OF DUNCAN
Following is a sketch of the life of Oliver Perry Gard, whose was reported briefly in last week's Telephone.
Oliver Perry Gard was born on a farm in Franklin Co., Indiana, April 27, 1843 and departed this life Jan 22, 1918 at the age of 74 yrs. 8 mo. and 26 days. He was third of four children of Moses and Margaret Gard.
On this homestead on the prairie, he spent his boyhood. He remained on the farm until 18 years of age, when he decided to go west. He moved to Stark County, Illinois and after two year he went north to Winona, Minn. Later he left Winona and went to Toulon, where he married Miss Matilda Caskey, Nov. 19, 1865. In the spring of 1866, he returned to Winona where he engaged in carpenter work and supervised the construction of Winona's largest buildings as well as many building through southern Minnesota, Iowa and S. Dakota.
For many years he was in the employ of the Western Elevator company which work he concluded in 1913.
For many years, Mr. Gard had been a member of the Winona County Old Settlers Associations. In 1893 his first wife died, leaving him two children, Mrs. Augusta Meilicke of Mandon, N. Dakota and Olive P. Gard Jr. of Red Wing, Minnesota.
In 1888 he married Miss Ella Caskey of Millard Mo., who with two children Mrs. Evelyn Calef and Grace survive him. Besides these, he leaves to mourn his loss six grandchildren and one aged brother, Wm. Gard of Walla Walla Washington and many friends in his old home, Winona, Minn.
The funeral services were conducted at the Duncan M. E. church at 11 o'clock Friday of last week, Rev P. P. Bear officiated. The songs were sung by Mr. and Mrs. A. C. McLauglin of Yates City. Interment was made in the Stringtown cemetery.
