Capt William Seaton IV was born to Lieut William Seton III and Emily (Prime) Seton on January 28, 1835, in New York City. He was educated at Fordham and Mount St Mary's. He was a member of the Bar after studying law and passing the examination. After serving in the 16th Artillery during the American Civil War, he became a writer. He married Sarah Redwood Parrish of Philadelphia on January 3, 1884 and had one son, William Seaton V (1886) and died when only one month old. In 1895, his wife Sarah passed away leaving him a widower. When he died on March 15, 1905 in New York City, he left a small Scholarship fund to Mount St Mary's.
