Philippine Insurrection Medal of Honor Recipient. Hugh McGrath served as a Captain, 4th United States Cavalry. He was awarded his Medal of Honor posthumously for service at Calamba, Luzon, Philippine Islands, July 26, 1899, during the Philippine Insurrection. His citation reads: "Swam the San Juan River in the face of the enemy's fire and drove him from his entrenchments."
