The Pearlette Call - April 17, 1879:
When our Colony left Zanesville (Ohio) on the 18th of February, little we thought that in less than a month one of our members would like cold in the earth; little we dreamed that our first issue [of the newspaper] would contain a death notice. But scarce had we arrived in Dodge till one of our fairest little ones sickened; and on the morning of the 12th of March, at the residence of Howard Lowry, in Meade Co., little Pearl Atkinson closed her eyes in death, having been brought from Dodge the day before.
Although she died on the very borders of civilization, and hundreds of miles from home, yet her last sufferings were made lighter by the ministrations of friendly hands; all that could be done was done. But ugly death stood without the portals, issuing his orders, and the spirit of Pearl must needs take its flight across the river.
She was buried the following day, and nearly every member of the settlement was present.
Poor Pearl! She was a sweet child. Her death was a sad misfortune, and by it we have another instance of the peculiar ways of providence and are once again forced to ask "Who will be next?"
