Ben and Leona were united in marriage on May 20, 1928. They had three children: Constance, Gary and Benadene (my mother).

Ben and Leona were my Grandpa and Grandma.

In the 1910 Census, Grandpa was 8 years old and living with his mother and stepfather in Dayton, Michigan. His father had died in 1902, the year after Grandpa was born.

In the 1920 Census, Grandpa was a laborer working in an auto factory in Flint, Michigan. He was 18 years old and living as a roomer. He was apparently not living with his mother and stepfather at the time.

During the time of 1920 - 1930, Grandpa had told his family that he did not wish to become a farmer. Grandpa came from a long line of farmers. There is nothing wrong with being a farmer it was just not something that he wished to do with his life. He decided to become a hairdresser.

Grandpa became a hairdresser and by the time of the 1930 Census. Grandpa and Grandma were living at 1335 Vermont Ave, Los Angeles, Ca. Grandpa was working as a hairdresser in a barber shop.

By 1932 they had moved to 336 Fort Washington Ave, Washington Heights, New York, New York. Their apartment there was in the Washington Heights section of New York and their apartment overlooked the Hudson River. The apartment building still exists today.

By 1934 or 1935 they were living in Newaygo Co., Michigan and by 1935 or 1936 they had moved to Miami, Florida. By 1937 they were again living in California at 331 W. Marigold St., Altadena, Ca.

On April 25th, 1930 Grandma and Grandpa sailed on the SS Governor Cobb from Havana, Cuba to Key West, Florida. They were just newly married for almost two years and had not had their children yet. At this point in history Americans could travel to Cuba. It must have been a lovely trip.

On November 9th, 1933 Grandma and Grandpa had their first child, a girl they named Constance Yvette. On August 13th, 1935, they had their second child, a boy they named Gary Lee. On February 10th, 1938 they had their third child, a girl they named Benadene Leone.

After working as a hairdresser in New York, Michigan and Florida, he eventually made his way back out to California. Grandpa styled the hair of such young starlets as Betty Davis, Bebe Daniels, Laura La Plante, Mary Pickford, Betty Bronson, Mae Murray, Mary Brian and Joan Crawford. He was known as "Mr. Bernie" to his clients. His beauty shop was called "Bernie's" and was located at 54 South Oakland Ave., Pasadena, Ca. and the telephone number was "Wakefield 1311". Grandpa's beauty shop in Florida was located at 114 E. Flagler St., Miami, Florida.

Unfortunately, Grandpa died at a very young age. Grandpa died of peritonitis due to a ruptured appendix. He had started experiencing stomach pains while on a vacation camping trip to the mountains with his young family. By the time that he got to a hospital, his appendix had ruptured.

His family misses him very much and we look forward to seeing him again (some of us for the first time) in Paradise!!!

XOXOXO

"Last Friday morning it pleased God to call from our side Mr. B. Boerman whom we mentioned in our prayers last Sunday. We express our heartfelt sympathy with Mrs. Boerman and her two little ones, and with bereaved relatives here and back East. May God's grace abound and sustain in this hour of need. And may also this event, so unexpected, be sanctified unto our hearts. The funeral services will be held at this church tomorrow afternoon at three."
