Virgil Maurice Munroe was born on November 26, 1888 in Haralson County, Georgia. His parents were Benjamin Overton Munroe and Millie Caroline Winkles Munroe.
He married Carrie Lou Emma Brown on December 4, 1909 in Haralson County, Georgia, and they moved to Dundee in Geneva County, Alabama. Their first two children, Hubert Clifford Munroe and Peerman Munroe, were born in Alabama. Sometime after Peerman was born, the family moved back to Haralson County, Georgia. They went on to have five more children who were born in Haralson County: Maurice Medford Munroe, Virgil Mozelle Munroe, William Emery Munroe, Theodore E. Munroe, and one still-living son.
According to the 1910 Geneva County Census, he worked as a laborer in a sawmill. On the 1920-1940 census records for Haralson County, Georgia, he worked as a farmer. According to my mother (Virgil's granddaughter), he became deaf at some point in his life, and she showed me the little card that he carried with the alphabet in sign language printed on it. He would show the card to people when they had trouble communicating with him so they could spell words in sign language.
Virgil died on July 23, 1958 at his home in Haralson County, Georgia. According to his death certificate, he died of Coronary Thrombosis and Arteriosclerosis. He was a member of Bethlehem Baptist Church in Felton, Haralson County, Georgia, and he was buried there on July 24, 1958.
