US Congressman, US Senator. He gained recognition as a politician serving in the United States House of Representatives and then the Senator. He served during the American Civil War as an officer in the 136th Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry (a nine-month enlistment unit), rising to the rank of Captain. After his discharge from the Army, he entered the Pennsylvania Bar in 1864, and steadily rose to prominence in his county. He served in the Pennsylvania State Legislature before being elected as a Republican to represent Pennsylvania's 16th District in the United States House of Representatives, serving from March 4, 1877 to March 4, 1881. He had declined to run as a candidate for his Congressional seat in 1880, opting to run for United States Senator in a race that he won over incumbent Senator William A Wallace. He served as a Senator from Pennsylvania to the United States Senate from March 4, 1881 to March 3, 1887. After the end of his term, and after he served a year as a Pennsylvania State Court Judge, he retired to Wellsboro, Pennsylvania, where he died in 1907.
