Pioneer Of County Dies In Washington

G.W. Pike, for Many Years Resident of Hubbard Prairie, Passed Away December 10th

Gilman Wallace Pike, a pioneer of Minnesota, who resided in Hubbard until he retired from active life and went west to Bellingham, Wash., passed away there on the 10th of December at the ripe old age of 85.
Mr. Pike was born in the town of Athens, Maine Feb. 28, 1843. He was a veteran of the Civil War for which he enlisted July 7th, 1862 in Company F of the 20th Maine Volunteers, which was as soon as he was able to convince military authorities that he was old enough to go. He was discharged from the service on the 15th of January, 1863 after a serious illness that gave him an honorable discharge on the grounds of disability.
Upon the completion of his army life he became one of the great civilian army of pioneers who pushed forward into the far western country and helped to build the great states of Wisconsin, Iowa, and finally Minnesota where he located one of the first homesteads on Hubbard Prairie, during a period when pioneering required courage and sacrifice.
It was at Hubbard that he met and married Elizabeth Vogtman, also a pioneer of Minnesota. Mr. and Mrs. Pike lived in their homestead near Hubbard until 1919 when they moved to Bellingham, Wash., for the benefit of a milder climate during Mr. Pike's old age.
Mr. Pike was an active citizen in community affairs serving for nineteen years on the town board of Hubbard as well as promoting church work and community welfare interests. At the time of his death he was an officer of the J.B. Steadman Post of the G.A.R. of Bellingham.
He leaves besides his widow, six sons; Warren of Park Rapids, Delbert of Eureka, Mont., Ray of Park Rapids, Roy and Clement of Bellingham, Washington and Harry of Seattle, Washington; three daughters, Mrs. Abbie Zimmerman of Minneapolis, Mrs. Goldie Ross of Berkeley, California, and Edna of Bellingham.
One sister and four brothers survive, Mrs. Eva Bradshaw of Los Angeles, California, Warren of Waupun, Wis., Joe of Los Angeles, California, Mel of Casper, Wyo., and Charlie of Hubbard, Minn. The latter, who went to Bellingham to be at his brother's bedside arrived only in time for the final rites.
Funeral services were held in Bellingham, Wash., Thursday, December 13th and the remains were laid to rest in Bayview cemetery.

Gilman W. Pike, Civil War Veteran, Passes

Gilman Wallace Pike, who served in the Civil war with company F, Maine volunteers, from July 7, 1861, until his discharge January 15, 1863, because of disability, died Monday night at his home, 410 Carolina street, aged 85 years. He was a member of J. B. Steedman post No. 24, G. A. R., and of the Brotherhood of American Yeomen. He had lived in Bellingham nine years. Funeral announcements will be made by the Homer Mark mortuary. The deceased in survived by the widow, Mrs. Elizabeth Pike; six sons, Ray and Warren, Park Rapids, Minn.; Delbert, Eureka, Mont.; Roy G., Clement and Harry, at home; three daughters, Mrs. Abbie Zimmerman, Minneapolis, Minn.; Mrs. Goldie Ross, Berkeley, Cal., and Miss Edna Catherine Pike, at home; four brothers, Charlie, Hubbard, Minn.; Joseph, Los Angeles, Cal.; Warren, Ripon, Wis., and Mell, Casper, Wyo.; one sister, Mrs. Eva Bradshaw, Los Angeles, Cal., and twenty-seven grandchildren and eleven great-grandchildren.
