In 1933, the beloved Dalmatian Dixie, Hendersonville Fire Department's mascot of 14 years, was killed when she missed the fire engine and chased the truck out onto King Street. An ice truck travelling down King Street struck and killed the brave little dog.
Originally she was buried behind the old city hall on King Street. In 2000 Dixie was moved to her present location on the back of a fire engine. A horse-drawn carriage followed with a Dixieland Band playing Dixie.
The original headstone was broken the day before it was moved and repaired by the on-duty firemen using epoxy glue from Wal-Mart. Sometime around 2008 she was given a new headstone.
Gravesite is located at the Hendersonville Fire House on a small park like setting.
Dixie's headstone is a favorite place for geocaching in this area.

For Little Dixie:
There is a land where cotton grows,
A land where milk and honey flows,
I'm going home to Dixie; Yes; I am going home.
I've got no time to tarry, I've got no time to stay,
'Tis a rocky road to travel, to Dixie far away.
I've got no time to tarry, I've got no time to stay,
'Tis a rocky road to travel, to Dixie far away.
I will climb up the highest hill,
And sing your praise with right good will.
I'm going home to Dixie; Yes; I am going home.
O, I wish I was in Dixie!
Hooray! Hooray!
In Dixie Land I'll take my stand
To live and die in Dixie
Away, away,
Away down south in Dixie!
I've wander'd far, both to and fro'
But Dixie's heaven here below.
I'm going home to Dixie; Yes; I am going home.
I will proclaim it loud and long.
I love old Dixie right or wrong.
I'm going home to Dixie; Yes; I am going home.
O, I wish I was in Dixie!
Hooray! Hooray!
In Dixie Land I'll take my stand
To live and die in Dixie
Away, away,
Away down south in Dixie!
