CAPTAIN ABRAHAM DEAD
Prominent Southern Fayette County Man Called To Rest
Smithfield, Jan 27.- Captain James Abraham died in his home in Nicholson Township on Sunday night, January 23, 1903, in the 73rd year of his age. Deceased had suffered for many weeks from stomach trouble and for the past three weeks was unable to take nourishment.
Captain Abraham was one of the best known citizens and Republican of Southern Fayette, and the last of his generation of the well known Abraham family. He was the son of the late James and Mary Jobes Abraham and was born in the old Abraham homestead near here on November 14, 1830. His father served in the war of 1812, in Captain McClelland's Company and was a representative citizen of the county.
Captain Abraham was raised on the farm and in 1851 went to Virginia, but when the Civil War broke out he returned and in conjunction with Captain George W. Gilmore recruited a company of cavalry and was commissioned a First Lieutenant, the troops being mustered in at Clarksburg, July 24, 1861, as Pennsylvania Dragoons. His company scouted West Virginia and in six months 35 per cent of the men were killed or wounded. It also fought at South Mountain and Antietam. At Wytheville 22 men out of its 30 men engaged were killed or wounded. It also fought under Generals Averitt and Hunter aided in the pursuit of the Confederate Force that burned Chambersburg, July 20, 1861. He was mustered out at Wheeling, Aug 21, 1864 after 37 months.
On May 16,1848 he married Miss Janet, daughter of Captain and Mrs. James O'Donovan and of this union six children survive; William R., Mary M. wife of W.S. Nixon of Fairchance; Lucy, wife of Dr. Trippett of Brandonville; David, Petrie J. Jones R.; three are dead; Roy, Hayes and Birdie.
Captain Abraham is also survived by one brother, 'Squire A. Jones Abraham of Uniontown, who is the last surviving of the 11 children of James and Mary Abraham, his other brothers and sisters being, Sarah Rogers, Major Isaac M., Aaron Jones, Jane Hague, Elizabeth, Mary Enoch, James, Caroline and William.
The funeral will be on Wednesday at 1 P.M.
