French novelist and writer. Edmond was known as an anti-clerical writer that bordered on satire. His most famous writing was the novel 'Le Roi des Montagnes.' He faced criticism for the letters he wrote to the paper 'Le Figaro', attempted to be a playwright and was unsuccessful when he attempted politics. He excelled as a writer, earning acclaim with his serious novels. In 1862 he was initiated at the Grand Orient de France, and in 1884 was elected as a member of the Academie Francaise. Though known as a controversial writer, he had several widely received books, eight of which were turned into films.
