She was born on September 22, 1893 at 532 Ocean Avenue, Jersey City, Hudson County, New Jersey.

Siblings:
She had the following siblings: James Alyosius McLaughlin (1892-1964); and Margaret Mary McLaughlin (1897-1985) aka Marge McLaughlin, who married Christopher Aloysius Enright I (1888-1980).

In 1900 her parents were living at 152 MacAdoo Avenue in Jersey City and they were at 28 McAdoo Avenue in Jersey City from at least 1917 when her brother registered for the draft till she was married in 1926.

Catherine married William Thomas Rankin I (1890-1970) on June 24, 1926 at Saint Paul's Roman Catholic Church on 14 Greenville Avenue in Jersey City, Hudson County, New Jersey and they had 5 children.

Death:
July 31, 1989 in Yonkers, Westchester County, New York.

The Journal News of White Plains, New York on August 2, 1989: "Catherine Rankin, Mother of County Man. Catherine Rankin, a homemaker and Yonkers resident, died Monday of a stroke at Sans Souci Nursing Home in Yonkers. She was 95. She was born September 22, 1893, to Owen and Margaret Conboy McLaughlin in Jersey City, New Jersey, where she attended schools. On June 24, 1926, she married William Rankin in Jersey City. Her husband died in 1970. In the mid-1970s, she moved to Yonkers. Mrs. Rankin was a parishioner of Christ the King Church in Yonkers. She is survived by two daughters, Kathryn Mulligan of Brooklyn and Jeanne Schaumburg of Yonkers; three sons, William Rankin of West Haverstraw, and Owen Rankin and James Rankin, both of Mountain Lakes, New Jersey; 27 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. A brother, James McLaughlin, and a sister, Margaret Enright, died earlier. Arrangements are being handled by Whalen & Ball Funeral Home in Yonkers."

Burial:
She was buried in Long Island National Cemetery.
