After the war Tom went away to college, a daring adventure for a young man in that day, especially in the Reconstruction Era. While he was at school he died mysteriously; the family was never told the circumstances of his death. His body was returned home in a wooden box, packed in lime, but his grieving mother never did believe the body was really his. Mary Jane always hoped that one day he would come home so his grave was never marked.
