U.S. Senator. He attended Trinity College (1914-15), and served overseas with the Tank Corps, U.S. Army (1918-19) during World War I. After the war, he organized the textile firm Sellers Manufacturing Company in 1927 and served as secretary-treasurer and general manager. He was a member of the North Carolina Peace Officers Benefit and Retirement Commission, (1943-58), a member of the North Carolina Medical Care Commission (1945-51) and Democratic national committeeman (1954-58). In 1958, he was appointed as a Democrat to the U.S. Senate to fill the vacancy caused by the death of W. Kerr Scott, reelected in 1960 and served until 1973. An unsuccessful candidate for re-nomination, he resumed his previous business interests until his death.
