We ask you to join us in celebrating the wonderful life of Francis Eileen Foster, who, on Sept. 29, 2011, on the Feast of St. Michael and all Angels, at the grand age of 84, was raised to heaven by the love and prayers of her family and friends surrounding her bed and around the country.
She was born on June 17, 1927, in Covington, Ky., the first of three daughters of Herbert and Elzada Foster. Graduating salutatorian from Dixie Heights High Sschool in 1945, she then attended the University of Kentucky, having been awarded The Seagram's Scholarship. Graduating magna cum laude in 1949 with a degree in medical technology, she moved to Gallipolis, Ohio, and worked at Holzer Hospital. There she met and later married a gentleman sharing the same last name, the love of her life, Daniel Foster, on Dec. 18, 1952.
She embraced Joshua 24:15: "As for me and my house, We will serve the Lord." And serve she did. Eileen was at her happiest when she was involved in activities that helped others. When Dan was stationed at Camp Lejeune in the early '70s, Eileen's name and "can-do" spirit was well known by the base chaplains. She taught and was superintendent of Sunday School, created the Living Nativity Scene, and was a senior Girl Scout leader. Her magnum opus, in collaboration with Chaplain Goode, was a week long Christian Day Camp where she was appropriately known by the camp name "Happy." In 1972, General Bohn awarded her Marine Corps Wife of the Year, recognizing her many contributions that enhanced the lives of active duty Marines and their families while stationed at Camp Lejeune.
Settling in Cape Carteret after Dan's retirement in 1974, Eileen became an integral member of the Cape Carteret Rescue Squad as a Volunteer EMT, continued her love of Girl Scouting in the NC Coastal Pines Region, and joined her beloved Margaret Johnson at White Oak Elementary School as Miss Johnson's aide. Together they enriched so many young students' lives. Most importantly, she joined the loving church family of St. Peter's-By-the-Sea Episcopal Church, in Swansboro, where she taught Sunday school and Vacation Bible School. Active in the ECW she coordinated and participated in fundraising and outreach activities including at The Hem of His Garment, where she was known for her sorting and matching of the shoes. Friends and family will fondly remember Eileen's generous heart and sense of humor.
She is survived by her son and his wife, Rick and Teresa Foster of Elkridge, Md.; her daughter and her husband, Denise and Bob Hersh of Chesapeake, Va.; beloved grandchildren, Nick, Daniel, Stephen, Robert, Andrew and Kendalyn; cherished nieces, nephews and special friends, Flavia Neto, Yolanda Christian, Guy St John and the Haughinberry family. She is now in eternal joy and peace with her husband Dan; son Fred; granddaughter Tegan; parents, Elzada and Herbert Foster; and sisters, Dee Doe and Mary Elaine.
We will be celebrating her life at 9:30 a.m. Monday, Oct. 10, 2011, at St Peter's By-the-Sea Episcopal Church. Burial Services to continue at noon at Coastal Carolina State Veterans Cemetery, Jacksonville.
