US Congressman. The son of three-time Pennsylvania Congressman Andrew Stewart Sr., he was born in Uniontown, Pennsylvania, and attended Jefferson Medical College in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania prior to the Civil War. When the conflict started, he enlisted in the 85th Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry, and was commissioned as 1st Lieutenant and regimental Adjutant in November 1861. He served in this duty until September 1862, when he was assigned as a Captain of Volunteer and served as an Assistant Adjutant General through the rest of his service. He first ran for Congress in 1874, losing the election to Congressman John Winfield Wallace. In 1891 he was successful in his next attempt, being elected to represent Pennsylvania's 24th District in the United States House of Representatives. However, his election was contested by Alexander Kerr Craig, who was successful in his challenge. Congressman Stewart served from March 4, 1891 to February 26, 1892, when Alexander Craig assumed the seat. Craig would serve a little over 5 months before dying in office in July 1892, and Andrew J. Stewart made one last attempt to be elected for the seat he once held. However, that vacancy election was won by Democrat William Allen Sipe. Congressman Stewart spent his remaining days as a paper pulp and lumber manufacturer, and passed away at the age of 67 in Stewarton, Pennsylvania in 1903.
