Kathleen assisted her husband in his assignments as U.S. Ambassador to Niger, Liberia, and Somalia, receiving a certificate of appreciation from the Department of State for her services to the American communities in Monrovia and Mogadishu during the conflicts in Liberia and Somalia.

In addition to family members named previously, Kathleen is survived by her parents, Bill and Ione Kirby; her sister, Patricia Kirby; brothers Michael and Jim Kirby, as well as by many aunts, uncles, cousins and in-laws.

Interment followed a Mass of Christian Burial offered at the Shrine of The Most Blessed Sacrament, Washington, D.C. on October 5.
