Auto Race Car Driver. A pioneer in the sport of race car driving, he began racing as a teenager in bicycle racing tournaments. He began racing automobiles in 1902 and in 1903 he became the first person to crack the 60 miles-per hour speed limit in a car. He raced in the 1914 and 1915 Indianapolis 500 Race, and became the first to go over 100 miles-per-hour in the 1914 contest. He was suspended from the American Automobile Association from racing sanctioned raced due to his practice of participating in “outlaw” race contests, and spent a great portion of his career racing in exhibitions and match races. He passed away at the age of 68 in 1946 and was interred in the Holy Cross Cemetery in Culver City, California. A cenotaph was erected for him the Union Cemetery in his hometown of Wauseon, Ohio.
