Born and died in Marengo,McHenry Co.,Illinois, USASilas Donald was the son of Oliver and Charlotte Chatfield. He served with the 8th Ill. Cavalry,Co.G.for almost four years. He was the black sheep of the family. He was twice married, had seven children, and abandoned both families. He was kicked out of the Soldiers and Sailors Home in Quincy, Illinois for being AWOL once too often. He lived out his days in the Soldiers National Home in Milwaukee. His burial was arranged by his brother Oliver P. Chatfield of Escanaba, Michigan.
