Services for Edna Marcelle Ashley will be at 2:00 pm, Wednesday, October 5, at The First Assembly of God, Canton.
Marcelle, age 84, died peacefully Thursday morning, September 29, 2011 in Dallas, Texas.
She was born on October 25, 1926 in Raines County, Texas to John and Minnie Shumate.
She grew up on a farm and attended school in Emory.She loved music and played the guitar and sang professionally for a short while, and after marriage continued to gather with family and friends for an evening of back porch blue grass.
She married Roy Denton Ashley in Dallas, TX. They lived in Dallas where she attended the Assembly of God Church in Urbandale until moving to Canton to open a self service gasoline station at the corner of 243 and Hwy. 19 in Canton. There she joined the Assembly of God in Canton. After retirement they enjoyed traveling in their motor home. She enjoyed fishing, bluegrass festivals and studying the bible. After the passing of her beloved "Ashley" in 1987, she worked a little while in the family cake business, spent time visiting her family and traveled to revivals and gospel concerts in the company of her friends, Leona Woods and Lucille Terry. She was a comforting, wise and loving wife, mother and grandmother. She was respected as a woman that always gave more than she took.
She is survived by sister Merline Johnston, brother Melvin Shumate and her son Roy Don Ashley, his wife Barbara (Dallas), Stepson Hugh Mac Ashley, his wife Linda (Lancaster), Grandchildren Harlan Lowrance, his wife Michelle ( Maypearl), Robin Lowrance Ritchie, her husband Mark, Bambi Ashley Miller, (Waxahachie), Shawn McMillen and his wife Lisa (Plano), Great Grandchildren Brandon Lowrance, Conner Lowrance, Mallory Miller, Jamison Miller, Jensen McMillen, Madisen McMillen, Graysen McMillen, Emersen McMillen, great granddaughter Karsyn Brenlee Muirhead.
She is preceded in death by her parents John and Minnie Shumate. brother Marvin Shumate and sister Mauretta Edwards.
