Son of Rufus Rice and Louisa A. Mutzenbeaker.

On 12 Jul 1861 Edward mustered into service with the 15th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry as a Quartermaster Sergeant, being credited to the quota of Worcester, Worcester County, Massachusetts. He was 26 years and 12 days old.

On 8 Dec 1863 Edward was promoted to Quartermaster Sergeant.

On 28 Jul 1864 Edward ended military service with the 15th Massachusetts due to expiration of term of service.

On 21 Oct 1880 at Worcester, MA, Edward A. Rice attended the 14th annual reunion of the 15th Massachusetts Regiment.

Newspaper reports show him attending many later reunions.

He was enumerated in the 1890 US Federal census, Veteran's Schedule in Jun 1890 at Worcester, Worcester County, Massachusetts, as having served in the 15th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry.

He and his sister, Louisa A. M. Rice, were enumerated in the 1900 US Federal census in 1900 at Worcester, Worcester County, Massachusetts.

Edward died on 30 Jan 1909 at Worcester, Worcester County, Massachusetts, unmarried.

He was 73 years and 7 months old.He was buried in Jan 1909 at Rural Cemetery, Worcester, Worcester County, Massachusetts.
