Small Fortune in Pension Money Due Died in Poverty

Mrs. Nancy Drake, Aged Widow of Soldier of Rebellion Finds Govenrnment Unkind

With a back pension fund sufficient to have kept her comfortable for years due her soon, Mrs. Nancy Drake aged 85, died practically in poverty at 2:30 o'clock Saturday afternoon. Her death occurred at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Mary Goodrich, on Nutt street, after a brief illness of infirmities.

Mrs. Drake was the widow of David Drake, who served his country faithfully for two years during the Civil war. It appears that he died in Missouri. The pension claim of his widow has been pending for 11 years and was never allowed through some misunderstanding. Only recently the claim was again investigated, when it was found that a report of her marriage after becoming a widow was an error. It was figured that she would now be entitled to $1,500, and that amount was expected to reach her soon. Her death voids the claim, it is understood, and, it is said, her estate will only be given the usual widows' burial allowance.

Mrs. Drake is survived by four children, Mrs. Rachel McDonald and William Drake of McArthur, Charles Drake of Coalton and Mrs. Mary Goodrich of this city. Funeral services will be conducted at the New Church of Christ at 2 o'clock Tuesday afternoon. Burial at Greenwood.
