Services for Bernice M. "Bernie" Beck, 80, of Killeen, will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at First Baptist Church in Killeen with the Rev. Randy Wallace and the Rev. Jimmy Towers officiating. Burial will be in Maxdale Cemetery. Mr. Beck died Friday, May 9, in a Houston hospital. He was born in Brookhaven to Francis S. and Elizabeth L. 'Bessie' Woodard Beck. He lived his entire life in the Killeen area. He grew up in the Sparta and Youngsport areas where he helped his family run a blacksmith shop, mattress factory, cedar post operation, general store, and ranch. He served in the European Theatre during World War II as a Platoon Sgt. With the 65th Infantry Division.
He began his banking career in 1946, after returning from service in World War II. He was named chairman, president, and CEO of Union State Bank in 1972 and held this position until his death. At the time of his death he held the following distinctions: Chairman of Central Texas Area Support National Guard and Reserve, Member of Defense Orientation Conference Association, 32nd Degree Mason and Shriner, member of Model A Ford Club of America, member of American Legion and VFW, Chairman of Military Affairs Committee (Emeritus), member of Scott and White Hospital Advisory Board, Vice President of Fort Hood USO Council, and treasurer for Congressman Chet Edwards. He also received an honorary doctorate degree 1999 University of Central Texas and the Texas Banker Foundation Award presented this year for 57 years of service to the Texas Banking Industry. Mr. Beck's past distinctions include the following: director of the Texas Bankers Association, president and lifetime member of Central Texas Fort Hood Chapter of AUSA, president of Killeen Chamber of Commerce, president of Florence Chamber of Commerce, president Killeen Lions Club, president of KHS Band Boosters, president of Chisholm Trail Water Supply Corporation, president for Banks, Auditors, and Controllers, appointed by Gov. Bill Hobby to the Texas Water Resources Board, advisor to Killeen school board, chairman of Military Affairs Committee, chairman of Board of Regents for the University of Central Texas, board member of Texas Bankers Association (TBISCO), board member of A&M Committee, and member of the Howdy Committee. He also received a Good Neighbor Award from Fort Hood, the Roy J. Smith Award, the III Armored Corp Command Sergeant Major Award, and the Golden Deeds from the Exchange Club. He was also a member of the First Baptist Church of Killeen.
Survivors are his wife, Eula 'Sis' Beck of Killeen; a daughter, Collen Beck of Austin; a brother, T.E. Beck of Florence; and a sister, Evelyn Ray of Harker Heights.
Visitation will be 6-7 p.m. today at Crawford-Bowers Funeral Home in Killeen.
