Julia was the seventh of eight children born to farmers Richard "Derrick" and Jane Shepard, both native New Yorkers. In 1886 in Mt. Morris, New York, Julia married William Clark, a carpenter and millwright. Julia was 20 and William was 40. They had 3 children. Two of them Nina and Mary "Mollie," survived to adulthood. Julia died in Los Angeles.
