US Congressman. The son of prominent 19th century mathematician Robert Adrain, he was elected as a Democrat to represent New Jersey's 3rd Congressional District in the United States House of Representatives, serving from March 4, 1857 to March 3, 1861. After serving two terms, and being a vocal opponent of secession, he declined to run for a third term, and was succeeded by Congressman William G. Steele for the seat.
