José Aquilino was the son of Juan de Jesús Suazo and Juana María Fernández. On 8 Feb 1864, Taos; he married María Antonia Luevano. Their children were Juana Isabel, María Veneranda, Simóna, María Paula, Ambrosio, María Eva, and María Guadalupe.

José Aquilino served during the Civil War with the U.S. Army 1st Regiment, 1st New Mexico Militia Infantry Company E. The 1st NM Militia, commanded by Colonel Manuel Armijo, was organized November 1861 and discharged in Feb 1862.
