Mary was only 41 years old when she died in Tullahassee, Oklahoma and her granddaughter Barbara Robinson writes the following in the Flemmons Family Reunion 2004 book:
"At the time of her death, her children ranged from the ages of 2 months to 23 years old. Due to the wide range of their ages, some had loving memories to cherish while others had little or no memories of their mother at all. All were greatly affected by the loss of Mary Ellen Smith, especially her husband and children who loved her dearly."
