World War I Victoria Cross Medal Recipient. He served as a Lieutenant in the 102nd Battalion Central Ontario Regiment, Canadian Expeditionary Force. On September 27, 1918, Lieutenant Lyall was leading his platoon as a company support unit on a German position at Bourlon Wood and Blecourt, France. Flanking enemy movement, his unit captured thirteen prisoners, one field gun and four machine-guns. Later he led his men to another enemy strong point, rushed the position single-handed killing the German officer in charge, capturing forty-seven prisoners and five machine-guns. For gallantry in action, he was awarded the Victoria Cross by King George V at Buckingham Palace on March 15, 1919 and later achieved the rank of Colonel.
