Alvin, known as Rick to his family and friends, grew up in Vicksburg, MS. After graduating high school, he learned welding skills as an apprentice for the the Illinois Central Railroad.
In 1936, he met Mary Elizabeth Coates at a DeMolay dance in Memphis. Alvin was in Memphis to receive the Legion of Honor Award. They married in 1937 and lived in Vicksburg for a few years and then in Memphis, TN.
Alvin served in the United States Army during World War II as Sergeant, Lieutenant and Captain in the 763rd Railway Shop Battalion in England, France, Belgium and Germany. He was decorated with the European-African-Middle Eastern Campaign Medal with one battle star and returned to the U. S. on June 26, 1946. He served in the Army Reserve for many years.
He received his Bachelor of Science and Master of Science degrees from Memphis State College. (now the University of Memphis.) He received a Teacher's Advanced Certification from the state of TN in 1957 in Industrial Arts.
In his professional life, Alvin was Supervisor of Vocational Education for the Memphis City Schools. He also taught evening classes in professional development for teachers through the University of Tennessee. During the last year of his life, Alvin was an Assistant Professor of Industrial Education for the University of Tennessee in Memphis.
He was a devoted husband and a loving father. His favorite hobby was fishing.
