William "Will" Joseph Massingham, age 64, of Litchfield, died Wednesday, Aug. 10, 2011, at his home after a courageous battle with cancer.

He was born Nov. 23, 1946, in Chicago, IL, the son of Wilbur and Gladys (Lelo) Massingham. Will grew up in Iowa and Illinois.

He served in the Marine Corps, and moved to Minnesota after meeting his future wife, Ruth, at the hospital in Litchfield.

Will was united in marriage to Ruth Haag May 1, 1971, at the St. James Lutheran Church in Howard Lake.

He worked at Litchfield Lumber, Lakeview Lumber, Anderson Woodcraft, Emmanuel Nursing Home, and Innovex. During his working years, he also owned and operated Will's Window and Screen Repair for over 20 years.

Will was a member of the Zion Lutheran Church in Litchfield, and the American Legion for 37 years. He served on the Litchfield Fire Department for 20 years, and the Meeker County Ambulance Service for 23 years.

He enjoyed listening to country music, deer hunting, war strategy games, and spending time with his grandchildren.

Will is survived by his wife, Ruth of Litchfield; children Mike (and Renee) Massingham of Litchfield, Melanie (and Matt) Chrast of Sartell, and Brian (and Renee) Massingham of Dassel; grandchildren Paige, Dylan, Hayley, Joshua, Seth, Carter, Elizabeth, Tyler and Cody; siblings Tom (and Lynda) Massingham of Prineville, OR, Jo (and Butch) Mullis of Prineville, OR, Ed (and Sandi) Massingham of Wichita, KS, and Deb (and Robert Frerichs) Massingham of Greeley, CO; mother-in-law Eliza Haag of Howard Lake; sisters-in-law, Bea (and Melvin) Buttenhoff, Evelyn (and Dale) Schmieg, and Karen (and Merlyn) Schmieg, all of Howard Lake and many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Wilbur and Gladys; a brother, Frank; and father-in-law Ervin Haag.

The funeral service took place Saturday, Aug. 13 at 10:30 a.m. at the Zion Lutheran Church in Litchfield with the Rev. Christian Muellerleile officiating.

Visitation was Friday, Aug. 12 from 4 to 8 p.m. at Johnson-Hagglund Funeral Home in Litchfield, and continued Saturday, one hour prior to the service at the church. Interment was in the Lake Ripley Cemetery, with military honors provided by the Litchfield Military Honor Guard.

Will was my uncle. Even though we lived in different states all of my life, he made our family get togethers feel like we all lived next door. My dad, loved his big brother with all his heart and thought he hung the moon! I happen to agree. You're loved and missed more than you'll ever know Uncle Will.
