Hamilton was a section master for the Railroad. In the 1880 census he lived in Alleghany Co., VA with his wife Emma Louise and his son Z.V. Z.V. died and was buried at Crown Hill Cemetery.

In the 1900, 1910 and 1920 censuses Hamilton and Lula lived in the Walker's Creek district of Rockbridge Co., VA. Hamilton and Lula had 3 children but none survived.

His death certificate states that he died in Goshen, Rockbridge Co., VA with his burial in Clifton Forge, Alleghany Co., VA.

Hamilton served with the 6th NC Infantry Company C.
