At 14 she reportedly had a romance with notorious financier Alexandre Stavisky, performed in operetta as a teenager, and was first seen on the screen as an extra in Jean Renoir's 1926 "Nana". Paulette's 'official' movie debut came with Wilhelm Thiele's 1931 comedy "Le Bal" and she quickly found herself a cover girl for film magazines and a steady performer. Over the years she was to work with all the legendary directors of her time including Renoir, Marcel Carne, Jacques Tourneur, Louis Malle, and others. Probably her best known performance was as the chambermaid Lisette in Renoir's 1939 classic drama "The Rules of the Game" while among her other noteworthy appearances were Mme. Diogene from Malle's 1965 comedic adventure "Viva Maria!" which starred Brigitte Bardot, Germaine Fabre in 1980's "The Last Metro", and Mrs. Vieuzac of the 1990 comedy "May Fools". Paulette was married to actor Andre Ostertag from 1936 until her 1944 divorce, bearing a daughter in 1942; she published a 1992 memoir titled "A Short Life", worked in television during her later years, was last seen on screen in 2007's "Curriculum", and died of the effects of advanced age.
