William was the youngest child of John Behrens and Anna Maria "Mary" Brinker. His father, John, died when William was only 3-months-old.

William's widowed mother, Mary, married Henry Bentrup in the summer of 1879. She died in early 1883 leaving William an orphan before he was 5-years-old.

William married Caroline "Carrie" Haselhorst on 08 Jan 1901 in Calhoun County, Illinois. She was the daughter of Martin Haselhorst and Helena "Lena" Verborg.

William's bride, Carrie, had been born on 10 Dec 1883 in the same hometown as him. After their 1901 marriage, William and Carrie were the parents of at least 7 children, and he worked as a liveryman in Richwood Pct. in Calhoun County.

The Behrens family moved to St. Louis, Missouri in the late summer of 1916, and William worked there as a laborer in a foundry.
