Arthur Campbell

The 3rd generation of a Chelan pioneer family, Art was born to Arthur Clinton and Ann Campbell. He graduated from Chelan High School in 1942 and attended Washington State, where he lettered on the swim team and was a member of the Phi Delta Theta fraternity. Art served 34 months in the United States Navy. Upon his honorable discharge from the Navy, he returned home to assist in the operation of the family businesses of Campbell's Resort and No See Um Orchards. In 1952 Art married Kathleen Dowling in a small and beautiful wedding at Rosalia, Wash. Kathleen had come to Chelan to teach school.
Art is survived by his wife Kathleen; his children Nancy Campbell (Jim) Noack, Arthur C. (Diana) Campbell and Sally Campbell (Ray) Nelson; and his grandchildren Eric Campbell, Tom (Mia) Campbell, Patrick Noack and his sister Jennifer, James Nelson and Molly Nelson. He was predeceased by his brother Daniel Campbell.
Art had a genuine interest in the community and served on the Chelan Park Board and City Council. He participated in the development of the 18 hole Lake Chelan Golf Course. He was the third president of the golf club. The ownership of the golf course was later assigned to the City of Chelan, and remains a significant asset to the City. He worked closely with the Chelan P.U.D. planning team in designing the final draft of the Riverwalk Park. The park was then constructed on neglected waterfront parcels located between the two bridges, transforming the property into a lakefront pedestrian park.
With grant funds, Art chaired the committee that designed the Emerson Street Scene. This improvement linked Emerson Street to the Riverwalk Park. This design was reproduced on Woodin Avenue.
He was a committee member of the Lake Chelan Valley Scholarship fund and a life member of the Lake Chelan Historical Society. Over the years he was fortunate to enjoy the relationship with the fine people who worked and were engaged in the resort and orchard businesses. With loving family and friends Art appreciated the values of the Lake Chelan Valley; be it by boating, swimming, golfing, playing a hand of bridge or by Stehekinning.
Graveside Services will be held at Fraternal Cemetery on Monday August 22, 2011 at 10 a.m., with a reception following at Campbell's Resort Terrace. Friends and family are welcome.
