Crimea War Victoria Cross War Medal Recipient. He served as a Lieutenant in the 7th Regiment, Royal Fusiliers. On June 18, 1855, at Sebastopol, Crimea, his regiment came under a heavy Russian attack. During the assault, Lieutenant Hope went to the assistance of the adjutant, who was lying outside the trenches badly wounded. Having found that it was impossible to move him, even with the help of four men, he ran back across the open ground under fire from the enemy batteries, procured a stretcher and carried in the wounded officer. For most prestigious courage in the face of the enemy, he was awarded the Victoria Cross Medal by Queen Victoria during a ceremony in Hyde Park in February 1857. He later achieved the rank of Colonel and also invented the shrapnel shell for rifled guns.
