Mayor of New Bedford, Massachusetts for thirty two years, Charles S. Ashley remains the longest-serving mayor of New Bedford. His terms in office were not consecutive, however.

Charles was elected mayor of New Bedford, Massachusetts from 1897 to 1905. He then served from 1910 to 1914; 1917 to 1921; and his final term was from 1927 to 1936.

Charles S. Ashley School in New Bedford's North End was named for him. One of New Bedford's main boulevards is Ashley Boulevard, formery Bowditch Street.

Charles Sumner Ashley was born in New Bedford on 5 September 1858. He died there on 6 February 1941.

His first wife was Annie Budlong Butler, whom he married 13 November 1879. She died in New Bedford on 6 June 1890.

Charles Sumner Ashley was the son of Joshua Bishop Ashley and his wife, Susan Sanderson. He was the grandson of John Sherman Ashley.
