Scientist. The Secretary of the Smithsonian Institution, he graduated from Dickinson College in 1840 and became professor of natural history there in 1845. Becoming assistant secretary of the Smithsonian Institution in 1850, he began amassing the Smithsonian's huge collection of birds, reptiles, and other animals. He published "Birds" (1858), "Mammals of North America" (1859), and "History of North American Birds" (1875 to 1884). He was appointed Commissioner of Fish and Fisheries in 1871 and Secretary of the Smithsonian Institution in 1878, and served in both positions until his death, in 1887, at the Woods Hole Biological Laboratory, which he had established.
