PITTSBURG — Genevia E. Mathis, 63, of Pittsburg, a former Parsons resident, died at 10:14 a.m. Friday, Sept. 16, 2011, in the emergency room at Via Christi Medical Center in Pittsburg. She had been in failing health, but her death was unexpected.

She was born on Nov. 8, 1947, at Parsons to Howard and Emma (Beasley) Mathis. She grew up in Parsons and attended Parsons schools, graduating from Parsons High School in 1966. She worked at Fred Ronald Manufacturing Co., a nursing home and the Parsons State Hospital and Training Center as a housekeeper. She retired in 1993 because of health reasons. She moved to Pittsburg in 2009 and resided at Pittsburg Medicalodge South nursing home.

She married Gene Batella. They later divorced.

She loved crocheting, traveling, shopping, going to casinos and watching daytime TV programs like soap operas and game shows. She was a member of the former Friendship Southern Baptist Church in Parsons. She participated in the Shaping Lives Group in Pittsburg.

She is survived by her daughter, Kathy Fields, and her husband, Joe, of rural Pittsburg; her granddaughter, Whitney (Fields) Gould of Labadie, Mo.; her stepgreat-grandson, Brandon Gould; her brother, Calvin Mathis of Parsons; and several cousins.

She was preceded in death by her parents.

The service will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Carson-Wall Funeral Home. Burial will follow in Oakwood Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.
