According to Dean's online obituary, he attended Belleville Township High School. He then went to and graduated from the University of Illinois at Champaign with a Bachelor of Science in Banking and Finance. While at UI, Dean was a member of Delta Upsilon fraternity.

On 15 Feb 1941, Dean married Edna Grace Farthing.

During World War, II, Dean served with the United States Air Force in the Sudan.

After the war, Dean and Edna had three daughters: Nancy Catherine, Margo Harriet, and Deanna.
