Indian Mutiny British Victoria Cross Medal. He served as a Private in the 3rd Battalion, Rifle Brigade, British Army. At Lucknow, India, on June 13, 1858, an armed Ghazee was seen entering a tope of trees when a party of officers and men went after him. Private Shaw, coming upon him, drew his short sword and after a struggle, which he received a severe tulwar-wound, the Ghazee was killed. For individual gallantry in the face of the enemy, he was awarded the Victoria Cross Medal and later achieved the rank of Corporal. He died on board a ship while traveling from India to England.
