Ben was born in Thomasville, N.C., on June 25, 1929. Upon graduating high school, Ben joined the U.S. Marine Corps. President Harry Truman extended his three-year tour of duty for a period of 11 months during the close of the Korean conflict. Ben attained the rank of staff sergeant while he was in service with the first 90MM AAA Gun Battalion at Camp LeJune, N.C., from which he was honorably discharged on Aug. 28, 1952.
Mr. Baugh had an outstanding and a distinguished career of 37 years as an office services manager at the headquarters of the U.S. Marine Corps in Washington, D.C., where he won many awards. Ben attended American University in Washington, D.C. After his retirement, Ben joined Elks Lodge No. 450, AARP, and NARFE and settled in Massanutten Village. He attended Mount Olivet Christian Church.
Ben's two brothers, Bernard R. and William H. Baugh, preceded him in death.
His wife of 45 years, Geraldine Rogers-Baugh, and his daughter, Katrina Ann Baugh-Moran of Sterling, Va., survive. Also surviving are two sisters-in-law, Penny Baugh of Colorado Springs, Colo., and Edna Baugh of Thomasville, N.C., as well as many nieces and nephews. (He had six other half siblings, children of his father by the first wife Mary E. Black.)
A funeral service will be conducted by the Rev. Wayne Wright, 3 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 20, 2002, at the Kyger Funeral Home in Elkton.
Entombment will follow at Eastlawn Memorial Gardens in Harrisonburg. Memorial donations may be made to the Mount Olivet Church Building Fund, 38 Mount Olivet Church Road, McGaheysville, Va., 22840.
