Obituary DAMON McCRARY 84
Funeral services for Damon McCrary, 84, are scheduled for 10 a.m. May 30 at Wheeler Mortuary Chapel with Dr. Herbert Bergstrom officiating, assisted by Mrs. McCrary's son, the Rev. Keith McCrary. Burial will be in Portales Cemetery, Wheeler Mortuary of Portales is handling arrangements.
Mrs. Mccrary died late the evening of May 24 at Heartland continuing Care Center in Portales.
She was born Feb. 4, 1916 in McAlister, Okla., to Lora and Hiram (Hi) Morrison. She moved to Portales in 1919 with her brothers and her parents. She graduated from Portales High School in 1934. On April 14, 1936 in Clovis, she married R.H. "Red" McCrary. They lived in Portales most of their lives. She was a member of First Baptist Church for more than 50 years and was active until her illness.
She was also a member of the Canasta Group and Birthday Club. She worked in the linen and material department at Turner's Department store on the square for over 17 years.
During that time, she purchased a large amount of the material to sew for her children and grandchildren. She was an exceptional seamstress.
She was preceded in death by her husband R.H. McCrary, in 1975; one daughter, Kay Smoot in 1994; and five brothers including longtime Portales resident, Clyde Morrison.
Survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, Keith and Sue McCrary of San Antonio, Texas; three daughters and two sons-in-law, Wanda and Marty Martinez of Portales, Nancy Pool and Joyce Skaggs, both of Fort Worth, Texas, and Ed Smoot of Phoenix, Ariz.; and 17 grandchildren, Sandra Buffalo, Kale McCrary, Stacy Onley, Mike Davidson, Cindi Davidson, Debby Weems, Nancy Lees, Peggy Martin, Connie Harris, Kelly Gaston, Brian Smoot,Craig Smoot, Shae Fields, Deresa Raddatz, Lannie Miller, Carri Kennerly, and Doug Skaggs; also 25 great-grandchildren.
