Marian E. McWhorter died as a result of a collision between the passenger ship she was aboard and an oil tanker that was anchored in an area near Norfolk, Va. Several articles in the Nov. 1, 1948 issue of the Washington Post detail the events; a summary is that while she slept in the early morning hours, a freakish accident occurred which killed her and injured 3 others. A beam used to hold up a lifeboat was pushed in and shoved against her.
Marion, a native of Albany, Ga., graduated from Agnes Scott College in 1945 with a major in economics and social science. She had been employed just a few months in the Atlanta offices of the Bureau of Labor Statisitcs, U.S. Dept. of Labor. Having just completed several weeks of
special training in Washington, D.C., she was enroute to the Norfolk, Va. area to compile data there to be used for a consumer price index for that city.
Survivors included her parents Mr. & Mrs. John McWhorter of Tifton, Ga, and a sister, Mrs. Louise Bikerstaff of Columbus, Ga.
Special note: Miss McWhorter was not the first and wouldn't be the last to die while in the course of her duties as a federal employee of the U.S. Government. There have been countless numbers over many years. Hopefully her name will never be forgotten.
