Died at his residence at 10 0'clock a.m. on Friday, April 26, 1889, from injuries sustained in a fall. James Martin Baugh, age 72 years, 2 months and 21 days. Funeral services were conducted at the residence and the cemetery by Elders, A.M. Growden and E.B. Cayce, both of whom made remarks appropriate to the occasion. His remains were followed to the grave by a large number of his friends and kindred, thus attesting the esteem in which he was held by them. Interment in the New Cemetery at 3 0'clock P.M. Saturday.
James Martin Baugh was the oldest son of Bartlett and Nancy Baugh. He was born in Hawkins County East Tennessee, Feb. 6, 1817 where he grew to manhood's estate. At the age of 19 years he came to Franklin (1836) in and near which place he lived until his death; hence he was a resident of Franklin for over a half century and was consequently one of the old landmarks, and is identified with much of the city's history in time of adversity and in times of prosperity, in war and peace, in pestilence and in health. During all those years he has lived a quiet peaceful life and performed the functions of a true citizen, and his death we feel satisfied that none could say "he was my enemy", but on the contrary he had a wide circle of friends as was evidence by the large number that attended his funeral.
Upon his arrival in Franklin, he lost no time in fitting himself for a mechanic and subquently associated himself with Frank White, the leading builder and contractor of Franklin in that day. Before he had quite completed his apprenticeship, Mr. White died and while upon his deathbed, he called the young man into his bedside and committed to him his business. As the successor to Mr. White, he was a success. Four years after his advent in Franklin, he was married Dec. 12, 1840 to Miss. Eliz. S. Neely, the eldest daughter of the late Chas. L. Neely, with whom he lived devotely and happily. To them were born twelve children, six of whom survive him: E.L. Baugh, the fourth district this county; Loving H. Baugh of Texas; Mrs.James Ormes and Charles B. Baugh of Franklin; Mrs. J.T. Allen of Pulaski and Miss Mollie the youngest and quite a number of grandchildren. J.W.B. Nashville, Tennessee
