Actor. He was a tall, rugged, handsome actor best known for playing the character roles of ranchers, lieutenants, army sergeants, soldiers, henchmen, attorneys, policemen, jailers, train conductors, steelworkers, cowboys, judges, pastors, sheriffs, forest rangers, photographers, miners, guerillas, privates, indians, guards, rangers, reporters, historical figures, captains, corporals, mounties, constables, majors, and marshals, usually in war films, crime films, and western films and western television series. He will be best remembered for playing the role of 'Bob Rand' in the western film, "Lawless Valley" (1932). The film which written by, directed by, and starred J.P. McGowan, which was also written for the screen by Oliver Drake, and which also starred Gertrude Messinger, Anne Howard, Si Jenks, Richard Cramer, Chuck Baldra, Hank Bell, and Dick Botiller, tells the story of a cattleman's association who hires a range detective to track down and capture a notorious rustler known as El Lobo. He is also best remembered for playing the role of 'Tom Pike' in five episodes of the classic western television series, "Lawman," from 1958 to 1959. The western television series which also starred John Russell, Peter Brown, Peggie Castle, and Emile Avery, tells the story of Marshal Dan Troop of Laramie, Wyoming, and his Deputy Johnny McKay, an orphan Marshal Dan Troop took under his wing. He was born one of five children as Robert Chandler Oakes in Pisek, North Dakota, (some sources say South Dakota), to George Washington Oakes (1876-1909), a horse rancher, and his wife Irene Jane West Oakes (1878-1961), on June 4, 1899. The family moved first to Culbertson, Montana, and then to Helena, Montana, where he was educated locally and later graduated from high school. He was also drafted during World War I. He then attended the distinguished Montana Wesleyan College in Helena, Montana, where he was a star football player, and a member of the "W" Athletics Club, but later dropped out after he found work as a driver of a tourist bus at Yellowstone National Park. He later moved to Los Angeles, California, where he worked as an auto mechanic and on ranches before the film director John Waters offered him some small parts in westerns that were being made through Paramount Studios. He adopted the name of Lane Chandler and made his actual film debut playing the role of an 'Extra' in the short comedy film, "The Idle Class" (1921). The film which was directed by, written by, and starred Charlie Chaplin, and which also starred Edna Purviance, Charles Aber, Laura Anson, Gladys Baxter, and Loyal Underwood, tells the story of a tramp who sneaks into an upper-class golf resort. The tramp meets a rich woman who is having an argument with her drunken husband. Complications arise when she mistakes the tramp for her husband. The conflict here is between Charlie the wealthy and alcoholic husband and Charlie the Tramp: the idle rich and the idle poor. In the opening scene, wealthy Edna descends from a Pullman car while the Tramp crawls out from under another one. At a fancy masquerade ball, Edna's husband appears as a knight whose visor is stuck closed. The Tramp shows up, running from the law, and is mistaken for the husband. Edna finds the new "husband" more to her liking than the real one. When true identities are revealed, a fight breaks out and the Tramp is ejected. Besides, playing the role of of an 'Extra' in the short comedy film, "The Idle Class" (1921), and playing the role of 'Bob Rand' in the western film, "Lawless Valley" (1932), his many other film credits include, "The Last Outlaw" (1927), "Open Range" (1927), "Love And Learn" (1938), "The Legion Of The Condemned" (1928), "Red Hair" (1928), "The Big Killing" (1928), "The First Kiss" (1928), "The Wolf Of Wall Street" (1929), "The Studio Murder Mystery" (1929), "The Single Standard" (1929), "The Forward Pass" (1929), "Firebrand Jordan" (1930), "The Lightning Express" (1930), "Rough Waters" (1930), "Beyond The Law" (1930), "Under Texas Skies" (1930), "The Primrose Path" (1931), "The Hurricane Horseman" (1931), "The Cheyenne Cyclone" (1931), "Riders Of The Rio" (1931), "Battling Buckaroo" (1932), "The Texas Tornado" (1932), "The Reckless Rider" (1932), "Guns For Hire" (1932), "The Devil Horse" (1932), "The Sign Of The Cross" (1932), "The Wyoming Whirlwind" (1932), "Via Point Express" (1933), "The Devil's Brother" (1933), "The Eagle And The Hawk" (1933), "Trouble Busters" (1933), "Corruption" (1933), "Fighting With Kit Carson" (1933), "Deluge" (1933), "War Of The Range" (1933), "The Wolf Dog" (1933), "Hold The Press" (1933), "Roman Scandals" (1933), "Sagebrush Trail" (1933), "Now I'll Tell" (1934), "Tomorrow's Children" (1934), "Beyond The Law" (1934), "The Girl From Missouri" (1934), "The Affairs Of Cellini" (1934), "The Merry Widow" (1934), "The Lone Bandit" (1935), "North Of Arizona" (1935), "The Phantom Empire" (1935), "The Outlaw Tamer" (1935), "Public Hero Number 1" (1935), "Coyote Trails" (1935), "A Face In The Fog" (1936), "The Bohemian Girl" (1936), "The Lawless Nineties" (1936), "The Return Of Jimmy Valentine" (1936), "Flash Gordon" (1935), "Hearts In Bondage" (1936), "Undersea Kingdom" (1936), "Winds Of The Wasteland" (1936), "Crash Donovan" (1936), "Idaho Kid" (1936), "The Black Coin" (1936), "The Magnificent Brute" (1936), "Law And Lead" (1936), "The Plainsman" (1936), "Four Days Wonder" (1936), "Three Smart Girls" (1936), "Stormy Trails" (1936), "Sea Devils" (1937), "Sing While You're Able" (1937), 'When Love Is Young" (1937), "Law Of The Ranger" (1937), "San Quentin" (1937), "Kid Galahad" (1937), "Reckless Ranger" (1937), "The Road Back" (1937), "Fly Away Baby" (1937), "The Singing Marine" (1937), "Public Wedding" (1937), "Heroes Of The Alamo" (1937, He plyed the role of 'Davy Crockett' in the film), "Confession" (1937), "Sea Racketeers" (1937), "The Firefly" (1937), "The Lady Fights Back" (1937), "Carnival Queen" (1937), "The Wrong Road" (1937), "Alcatraz Island" (1937), "Conquest" (1937), "The First One Hundred Years" (1937), "Zorro Rides Again" (1937), "Missing Witnesses" (1937), "She Loved A Fireman" (1937), "Exiled To Shanghai" (1937), "Rosalie" (1937), "Tim Tyler's Luck" (1937), "Wells Fargo" (1937), 'The Buccaneer" (1938), "The Jury's Secret" (1938), "The Lone Ranger" (1938), "Rocket Ship" (1938), "The Daredevil Drivers" (1938), "Start Cheering" (1938), "Land Of Fighting Men" (1938), "Flash Gordon's Trip To Mars" (1938), "Over The Wall" (1938), "Heart Of Arizona" (1938), "Two Gun Justice" (1938), "Marie Antoinette" (1938), "Passport Husband" (1938), "Many Sappy Returns" (1938), "I Am The Law" (1938), "Too Hot To Handle" (1938), "Red Barry" (1938), "Campus Confessions" (1938), "Crime Takes A Holiday" (1938), "The Spider's Web" (1938), "Mutts To You" (1938), "Girls On Probation" (1938), "Come On, Rangers!"
