Betty Loraine Martin Appling was born Sept. 24, 1917 in Sunset, Texas to Mertil and Jim Martin.

She died Sept 13, 2011 in Austin.

Loraine graduated from Wichita Falls High School, worked there and married Tom Appling during WWII when Tom was in the Navy. She followed Tom in his career to various places in West Texas before moving to Austin.

'Mrs. A' as she was known in the Senate, was a Senate employee for more than 20 years, retiring in 1985. She saw many come and go at the Capitol and gave many of them advice - solicited and unsolicited.

Her interest in politics continued. When she was no longer able to help candidates with mailings, she kept up with what was going on in the world with her friends of like minded politics (Democratic) and by television. A weekly trip to the beauty shop and the friends that were there at the same time, kept her up-to-date on local and world affairs.

She is survived by her husband of 69 years; one son and one grandson, all of Austin.

Graveside services will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Thursday, September 15th in Austin Memorial Park on Hancock Drive.
