"Aunt Betsy" Brown
On Monday, Dec. 22, 1902, Mrs. Betsy Brown, said to be the oldest women in the county, died at her home near Coffeen.
Deceased was born near Columbus, Kentucky, in 1812 and moved to this county many years ago. She was married to Hiram Brown, who died about 27 years ago.
The funeral services were held at the Baptist church near Coffeen on Wednesday, December 24, at 11 o'clock a.m., Rev. Vanbuilt of Indiana officiating. Mrs. Brown was a remarkable old lady. She was the mother of twelve children and up to her last sickness was wonderfully active both in mind and body. It was no uncommon thing for her to walk from her home to Coffeen after she was 90 years of age, do her marketing and return home on foot. Her maiden name was Elizabeth Craig, but for many years she has been known in the neighborhood where she lived as "Aunt Betsy Brown." She was a typical old pioneer mother and she enjoyed the love and esteem of a host of friends who loved to visit her and listen to her cheery words and her stories of the old pioneer days. She was a member of the Baptist church, having attached herself to this church many years ago, and she has lived a devoted, self-sacrificing Christian life.
Five of her children preceded her to the Better Land. Those living are: Mrs. Mary Gaut, Mrs. Martha McCann and Jackson Brown, who live in Kansas; Mrs. Emily Williford of Bingham, Fayette county; Mrs. Samuel Snyder of Fillmore township, this county, Mrs. J.C. Hanner who lived with the deceased and Mrs. Alice Haller who lives at Coffeen.
